President's speech

Gustavo Araoz

President of ICOMOS

Dear colleagues of ICOMOS,

I am well aware that the organization of our XVIIth General Assembly in Paris, from November 25th to December 2nd 2011 in the UNESCO headquarters is of exceptional significance, and I invite you to take an active part in it.

No General Assembly to date has been indeed held in France, which is somehow one of the founding members of the organization. ICOMOS, which was created and hosted in France, at the invitation of Mr André Malraux, then Minister of Culture, is strongly and historically related to France and thanks to the cooperative solidarity of the French section of ICOMOS, was able to count upon the unswerving support of the French authorities. A shared ideal for heritage, the vigour of the French committee, the qualities of its recognized experts are as many assets to a successful event.

Host countries have always welcomed participants in the best of ways and have always endeavoured to gather forces in order to raise public awareness of the positive effects for society of actions towards cultural heritage.

The chosen theme for the Scientific Symposium: “heritage, a driver of development”, is both timely and central to our ongoing global debate about the future of heritage. For that reason, it seems a suitable topic in order to spark off debates and exchanges of quality and to answer current issues which are the concern of all countries.

The memory of the last General Assembly held in Canada is still in our minds and I am positive that this new Assembly will leave as strong a mark on those who will take part. I thank the French committee for its involvement in the organization of this event.

Dear colleagues, I thank you in advance for your participation. I am certain that many of you will come and feed the content of our debates and I wish for this week of work and exchange to be the exceptional occasion to do so.

Finally, I ask all ICOMOS members worldwide to join me in expressing to the French National Committee our profound appreciation for the extraordinary talent and work that they are investing to ensure the success of our XVIIth General Assembly.

President of ICOMOS France

Dear colleagues of ICOMOS,
Be welcome on the registration website of the 2011 ICOMOS General Assembly.
First and foremost, I would like to mention my gratitude to Mr. Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the French Republic for his High Patronage and to Ms Irina Bokova, General Director of UNESCO who made the UNESCO headquarters available for us.
The ICOMOS French committee, of which I am President, senses at this early moment of the year that 2011 will be a great year for ICOMOS France and I fully measure the responsibility which devolves upon us.
No General Assembly to date has been indeed held in France, which is somehow one of the founding members of the organisation. The French committee, which is the largest one with more than 1100 members, will be entitled as host country to organise the event and to receive the participants.
Host countries have always been receiving participants in the best possible way and have always endeavoured to gather forces in order to raise public awareness of the positive effects of actions towards cultural heritage for society. The successful example of the Canadian Assembly is still in our minds and I hope that this XVIIth General Assembly to be held in Paris, from November 25th to December 2nd 2011 at the UNESCO headquarters, will leave as strong a mark on those who will take part.

The theme that has been chosen for the symposium is of particular importance to me: “heritage as driver of development”. In a modern society dealing with globalisation, this topic has indeed us wondering what role heritage has to be given. Though heritage has been left aside for a long time with only a protective status and has often been considered as a burden to development, it is on the contrary likely to play from this moment on an essential part in the economic development, since it is a way to reclaim the indispensable reference points and the diverse cultural identities that are currently dying out and that our world is losing.

Along with this message, I would like to say how grateful I am to the Organising Committee members, and to those who are striving for the success of this event. Firms and companies who will join us are also sincerely thanked.

It seems to me that the key to the success we are hoping for lies in the quality of the people which are part of the Honorary Committee and the Scientific Committee.

Then let us register, dear colleagues, and see you in Paris at the end of November!
